For many people, the midsection can be one of the most difficult areas to shape and tone, even with consistent diet and exercise. Factors like aging, pregnancy, and significant weight loss can cause loose skin, weakened muscles, and persistent fat deposits that seem immune to change.

Dr. Sean Lille offers tummy tuck surgery to help patients achieve a firmer, smoother abdominal profile. With years of experience and a reputation for natural results, Dr. Lille customizes every procedure to fit the specific needs of his patients.

Understanding the Tummy Tuck Procedure

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying muscles. This surgery is often sought by individuals who have experienced changes in their abdominal area due to weight loss, aging, or pregnancy. During your consultation, Dr. Lille will listen to your concerns and design a surgical plan that targets your problem areas and supports your long-term aesthetic goals.

Patients who undergo a tummy tuck often report dramatic improvements not only in their physical appearance but also in their confidence and comfort. This procedure is particularly effective for those who are dealing with sagging skin that won’t tighten on its own or abdominal muscles that have separated—a condition known as diastasis recti.

Choosing the Right Approach

There are several variations of the tummy tuck procedure, each designed to address different levels of correction. A full tummy tuck is often the best choice for individuals who need extensive muscle tightening and skin removal in both the upper and lower abdomen. This version also involves repositioning the belly button for a more natural look.

For those with more localized concerns beneath the belly button, a mini tummy tuck might be sufficient. It involves a smaller incision, a shorter recovery period, and no need to adjust the belly button.

Patients who have undergone significant weight loss may benefit most from an extended tummy tuck, which allows for contouring of the abdomen as well as the hips and flanks.

Dr. Lille will walk you through these options during your consultation, ensuring you understand what each entails and how they align with your goals.

What Happens During Surgery

Tummy tuck surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a certified surgical facility. Dr. Lille begins by making an incision low on the abdomen, typically placed in a natural crease to help minimize visible scarring. He then repairs any weakened or separated abdominal muscles, removing excess skin and fat to create a tighter, more youthful appearance. The remaining skin is pulled taut and sutured into place, and in cases of full or extended tummy tucks, the belly button is repositioned for balance and harmony.

Once the procedure is complete, you’ll be moved to an overnight recovery facility where you will stay one night, returning home the next morning with detailed recovery instructions and supportive garments to help manage swelling and protect the surgical area.

Recovery and Results

Recovery times can vary depending on the extent of your surgery, but most patients begin to feel better within a week or two. Initially, you may experience swelling, bruising, and a sensation of tightness in the abdominal area. While you’ll need to take it easy for the first few days, light walking is encouraged to promote circulation and healing. Over the next few weeks, your mobility will gradually improve, and most patients return to normal activities, including moderate exercise, within six to eight weeks. Full results generally become visible around the six-month mark, once swelling has completely subsided.

Throughout your recovery, Dr. Lille and his staff will monitor your progress and provide guidance to ensure a smooth, safe, and satisfying healing process.

Who Makes a Good Candidate

Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are generally in good health, have a stable weight, and are non-smokers or willing to quit 6 weeks before and for at least 2 months after surgery. It’s also important that you have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve. A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss but rather a way to enhance your body contour once you’re close to your target weight. During your consultation, Dr. Lille will evaluate your health history, examine your abdomen, and discuss your vision for the procedure.

  • Abdominoplasty Recovery

Immediately after surgery, the patient who underwent a full or a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck will be transferred to a recovery care center, where the nursing staff will attend to all the immediate medical needs and comforts of the patient. Patients will usually be discharged the following day to home. Mini tummy tuck patients are discharged home following their surgery. For those visiting from out of town, arrangements can be made with assistance from our staff at nearby hotels or motels.

  • Tummy Tuck Aftercare

When at home, patients will be resting and sleeping in recliner chairs and walking slightly bent over to relieve the tension at the incision sites. Activity restrictions are in place and follow up evaluations with me personally will be conducted at 1 and 2 weeks with a possible appt on the 3rd week following the surgery. A final follow up is usually conducted at 3 to 4 months after surgery. Once recovery is complete, patients can enjoy their results. • Tummy Tuck Scarring

Scarring is usually red and pink in the beginning, progressing to the color of the surrounding skin area usually between one and two years. We have different treatments to help enhance and facilitate the scarring maturation process with one, significantly reducing the scarring.

  • Pain After Tummy Tuck

Discomfort is managed quite well with prescription narcotics and the choice of a pain-reducing infusion system that is placed at the time of the procedure. This infuses pain relief agents for a period of two days.

Tummy Tuck Q&A

Q: Does A Change In Weight Interfere With The Results Of A Tummy Tuck Procedure?

A: Before any tummy tuck procedure, a patient should be at their optimal weight and should intend to maintain that weight after the procedure has been performed. Weight gain or weight loss may interfere with the results of a tummy tuck.

Q: How long is the scar from the abdominoplasty?

A: The length of scar depends on the type of abdominoplasty procedure being done. It also depends on the amount of extra skin and weakness of the abdominal wall. The length of the scar usually extends from the upper pubic area to the front of the hips in a mini tummy tuck and extends just past the hip bones in a full abdominoplasty. In an extended abdominoplasty, the scar extends past the hip bone.

Q: Do scars disappear from an abdominoplasty?

A: No scars disappear. It takes a full year or two for scars to fully mature. Everyone’s scars heal differently, but typically, scars are red and then fade to pink. At their final maturity, we hope for fine white scars, but they will always be different from the surrounding skin. Dr. Lille places them in the most inconspicuous area along the bikini line in a banana shape to help conceal the scar in the most optimum way.

Q: Are drains used in abdominoplasty?

A: Dr. Lille uses one drain for a mini tummy tuck and two drains in a full or extended tummy tuck. They usually are left in for one to two weeks depending upon the amount of drainage in a day.

Q: Does Dr. Lille use anything to speed up healing in the operation?

A: While performing the tummy tuck on Scottsdale patients, Dr. Lille performs meticulous closure with all sutures below the skin, except for those in the belly button. He uses a tissue glue spray in the abdominal opening before closure, which facilitates healing and decreases the amount of drainage from the drainage tubes. He also utilizes a tissue glue tape on the exterior of the incision, which has proven to decrease wound dehiscence (opening) and create a nicer scar.

Q: How much does a tummy tuck cost?

A: The cost of a tummy tuck in Scottsdale varies depending on numerous factors. The price of an abdominoplasty is impacted by the length of time required to perform the surgery, the amount of tissue removed, and the techniques utilized.
