Doctors hands a woman a breast implant as he explains its type and benefitsChoosing the right breast implants is an important step in your breast augmentation journey. Dr. Sean Lille, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Scottsdale, AZ, has performed around 4,000 breast augmentation procedures, bringing decades of experience and advanced skills to every surgery.

With so many options available, Dr. Lille understands it can initially be overwhelming. That’s why he takes the time to explain your options — and it’s why we’re covering important info about implants in today’s blog. Read on to learn five major factors to consider when choosing the right implants.

Implant Profile

Implant profile, or projection, refers to how far implants protrude from the chest. Low-profile implants have a wider base with less projection. In contrast, high-profile implants have a smaller base but more projection, giving a rounder and fuller look. Moderate profile plus are in-between and create a more natural enhancement.

Implant Volume

Implant volume is a major factor to consider when choosing your implants. There are implants to fit any size woman. You can select small implants for a subtle and natural-looking enhancement, medium ones for a noticeable yet still-natural appearance, or large ones for a more dramatic look.

Implant Material

Implant options include silicone shells filled with saline (salt water) and all-silicone implants. Silicone implants feel like natural breast tissue and tend to have better longevity than saline implants. Saline implants are adjustable after placement, which is an advantage for many women, but they carry a higher rupture risk and don’t generally last as long.

Implant Texture

The outer silicone shell can be smooth or textured. Dr. Lille prefers smooth implants because they carry a lower risk of rippling and tend to move more smoothly into the breast pocket during surgery. And most importantly, Dr. Lille prefers smooth shells because they’re safer for our patients. Textured implants have been tied to breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL,) a rare type of cancer, while smooth implants have not.
